Submit An Abstract

The Program Committee of the Southern California Chapter, American College of Surgeons, requests your participation in the 2021 Annual Scientific Meeting. You are invited to submit an abstract on the clinical or laboratory research project of your choice. CASE REPORTS will not be considered for oral presentation.  Simultaneous submission of an abstract to the SCCACS and any other organization or publication is prohibited and will be cause for abstract rejection without consideration.

Abstracts are only accepted through this online submission form -- no longer through the mail. Abstracts must conform to the Instructions for Preparation of Abstract, and may not have been submitted to a journal for publication, published previously, or presented at a national or regional meeting prior to the 2021 Chapter meeting. Accepted abstracts will be published in the program. If your abstract is selected for presentation in the General Session, you will be required to submit a manuscript for consideration of publication in The American Surgeon. All participants are required to register for the meeting.*

ATTENTION RESIDENTS! A cash prize will be awarded for the best paper submitted by and presented by a resident. This must be indicated on the Abstract Form if the paper is to be considered for the Residents’ Research Award, and include a letter from the Program Director stating that the abstract is primarily the work of, and will be presented by, a resident.

The Program Committee looks forward to receiving your abstract by close of business, Tuesday, September 15, 2020 through this online submission form. No abstracts will be considered for plenary presentation after Sept. 15, 2020. No abstracts will be considered that have not been submitted through this online Abstract Form or who have not submitted all required materials - original senior author signatures, MOC/SELF ASSESSMENT CREDIT questions, etc. All uploaded abstracts MUST confirm to the format described in Instructions for Preparing Abstract. Please read items to the right before starting your submission.

Maheswari Senthil, MD, FACS
Program Chair

*All presenters must register for the meeting. There will be no Registration Fee charged to Medical Students and just a nominal fee to Residents if registered before December 18, 2020.

JACS Submission Opportunity

During the abstract review process, the program committee will select the top abstract submissions for an opportunity to submit a manuscript for potential publication in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS). If you are selected to be considered for a JACS publication opportunity, your JACS formatted manuscript will be due to the Recorder by December 2, 2020 and senior authors will be required to participate in peer review. The SCCACS does not determine whether or not your manuscript is ultimately published in JACS. The top plenary presentation abstracts will be considered for this opportunity. If selected for consideration and the manuscript is not reviewed favorably by the JACS editorial board, you will still be required to present your work at the SCCACS annual meeting and can still submit your paper to American Surgeon or other journal of your choice.

read before Submission!

The online submission form does not allow you to save the form and return later. Before you start the submission process, go through the items below and make sure you have reviewed and have everything on hand when submitting your abstract:

  • Read Instructions for Preparing Abstract
  • Prepare abstract according to the guidelines and have a Word file of abstract ready for upload
  • Have address/email contact information available for both Senior Author and Presenter
  • You MUST submit 2 questions with 4 possible answers for each for MOC/SELF ASSESSMENT CREDIT. This must be sent at time of submission.
  • For Poster presentations and Plenary presentations, original signatures will be required from the Senior Author after initial acceptance and prior to final confirmation. The Senior Author will be contacted and signature requested.
  • Research Award consideration - you must include a letter form Program Chair confirming the work is primarily that of and will be presented by, a resident.  It is your responsibility to secure that letter and to submit it to the Chapter office.

MOC self assessment credit - question writing

For the 2021 SCCACS meeting, surgeons will be able to take an online quiz to qualify for self-assessment credits for ALL sessions. A passing grade of 75% must be achieved to earn the credits. Abstract submissions MUST include 2 questions per submission - 1 of which needs to be a clinical case situation.

For ALL abstracts submitted for the 2021 Meeting, 2 questions/answers for MOC/Self Assessment Credit must also be submitted at the time of abstract submission. NOTE: Of the 2 questions you submit, 1 MUST be a clinical case situation. Under NO circumstances can you include a True/False question and you should avoid using an answer choice of "all of the above" or "none of the above".

The American College of Surgeons has put together quiz writing guidelines that the questions should adhere to - please be sure to review this material prior to submitting your abstract and MOC questions.
